The Pittsburgh Cookie Table: A Wedding Tradition

Imagine this: you arrive at a wedding ceremony and take your seat. As you look around, everything seems to be normal. The DJ looks ready to jam, the decorations are on point, and the dance floor looks — wait a second. In the distance, you see tables overflowing with cookies of all varieties. What kind of heaven is this, you ask? Let me introduce you to a Pittsburgh wedding tradition: the cookie table.

The calm before the storm. I ran to take this picture before anyone could get in my shot.

In my hometown Pittsburgh, PA, one special tradition we like to have at our weddings is the iconic Pittsburgh Cookie Table. A cookie table is born when a few tables are lined up with an overabundance of cookies to choose from. The cool part is that most of the cookies are made by wedding guests specifically for this event.

Recently, I was lucky enough to go to a wedding with a cookie table, and it was amazing. The bride’s family knew people would attack the table as soon as cookies were visible, so the table had to be covered up before the big reveal. As someone who kept an eye on the table all night, I can tell you that as soon as the cookies were exposed, people ran to be the first in line.

Of course, I had to be one of the first people to get to the table to take pictures. I was simply fulfilling my blogger duties…and I wanted first dibs. I’m proud to say that I was probably the 10th person in line – my personal best record. I could’ve been in the top three, but I had to snap pics of the cookies before they disappeared.

I proudly stacked my plate high with cookies. I think I grabbed every single variety that the table offered. It was a tough juggling act carrying them back to my table, and yes, people stared at me and all my goodies, because how could such a sweet girl battle her way to the front and come out victorious? Let’s just say I can be very aggressive when it comes to getting what I want, and I really wanted these cookies.

If you’ve never experienced a cookie table at a wedding, I encourage you to suggest the idea to everyone you know that’s having an upcoming celebration, because who would say no to cookies? If you don’t want to push the subject, take a trip to Pittsburgh and crash a wedding. We’re all very nice people here, and we would love to share our traditions and cookies with you.

The best part about the cookie table tradition is that there are to-go boxes, so the guests can take home some goodness!
