Unicorn Cake Magic

Writer's picture: Kara McKennaKara McKenna

Do you feel the magic in the air? Apparently, it’s unicorn season. Unicorns and rainbow colors are everywhere you look, especially in food. I like a good rainbow as much as the next person, but I’m not sure how to feel about this trend. Sure, rainbow food looks beautiful, but I like my tongue when it’s one color, not 50.

I decided to settle my internal conflict of rainbow food once and for all by making a unicorn cake. I was going to go big, or go home. I put all my blood, sweat, tears, and glitter in this cake, and I was quite pleased with my result.

My first test came when I dyed my cake batter different colors. I was skeptical at first, but when I saw all the colors come together, I thought it was amazing. Not to mention that this was “funfetti” cake batter. When your cake batter has the word “fun” it it, you know you’re in for a good time.

When I was decorating my cake and making it into a unicorn masterpiece, I knew I had been converted to a rainbow lover. I WAS FEELING THE UNICORN MAGIC. I can’t remember the last time I worked on a cake and felt so happy simply looking at it. I finally understood the hype with rainbows and unicorns. You better believe the next time Starbucks offers their Unicorn Frappuccino, I will be first in line.

Ah, my beloved buttercream. For my unicorn hair, I chose the colors pink, purple, and blue. I didn’t use a special method to get my bag to look like this. All I did was put the colors together in a bowl to scoop into a piping bag with a star tip.

What’s a unicorn without two beautiful eyes? My majestic unicorn had blue eyes with eyelashes. Her mascara of choice? Buttercream, all the way!

I love this view because you get to see the rosettes I piped to make my unicorn’s hair. It doesn’t matter how big or small you make your rosettes because no two unicorns are the same.

This colorful funfetti batter looked absolutely marvelous. I tinted the buttercream in the middle with raspberry extract and pink dye. If you are making this cake for a child’s birthday party, I recommend using raspberry extract because it tastes like cotton candy.

This was a magical experience I will cherish for some time. I don’t know how I will make another cake as beautiful as this one in the future.

If you’re ever feeling down in the dumps, you should make something with a touch (or more) of color to brighten your spirits. It’s an amazing feeling to look at a colorful creation you made. The only hard part is realizing you will have to demolish it, eventually. It can only sit still and look pretty for so long…
